San Clemente is a coastal city located in southern Orange County, California. The city was founded in the 1920s by Ole Hanson, a former mayor of Seattle, who envisioned a “Spanish Village by the Sea.”
In 1925, Hanson purchased a large tract of land and began developing it into a master-planned community. He hired a team of architects to design homes, businesses, and public buildings reflecting the Spanish Colonial Revival style.
The city’s first homes were completed in 1928, and the following year, the San Clemente Pier was built, providing access to the beach and the ocean. In the following years, the city continued to grow and develop, with new homes, businesses, and public amenities being built.
San Clemente played a significant role in World War II. Serving as the site of a naval air station and a training center for Marines.
